I feel your pain. I must have heard this a thousand times when we ran our weight-management business:
"Your weight-management course doesn't work... I've been doing this for two weeks and I should have lost at least five pounds by now!"
Here's the problem: While thousands of people (boomers) are entering the "fitness environment" for weight-management (especially those who've already failed a dozen times at Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.) they have not changed their expectations. They still want to lose 20 lbs in 6 weeks!
You can't blame them, really. The media (TV, radio, web, print ads, etc) bombards us with daily messages of instant weight-loss through pills, restricted calorie dieting, etc.
Here's the Solution: The top priority for weight-management in the fitness environment is to MANAGE EXPECTATIONS.
Sit down with your client, look him/her straight in the eye and ask what he/she expects to happen.... and how fast. This is the starting point for an "education-based" weight-management course.
Take the time to "re-focus" your clients on the many positive changes they'll experience long before their bodies begin to lose body fat. For example, they should notice:
Increased energy
Better sleep patterns - all night
Stronger hair and nails
Healthier skin/complexion
Whiter, brighter eyes
Increased strength and endurance
Compliments from family and peers ("..something's
different about you..."
Knowledge is Power.... and perhaps among your clients, the Truth will set them Free! Check out the Reference Manual.
In
keeping with our Back-to-School theme, here's a
nifty little piece you can hand out to your
clients. It's from the good folks at CSPI
(Center for Science in the Public Interest) and is a
good read. This is a .pdf file, so allow a little
time for it load up.

All right... I'll admit it. I do get frustrated with some of the debate that goes on about nutritional supplements. Here are a couple of things I continually hear: Perhaps you can relate:
1.) The XYZ supplement can't be any good because there's no clinical research to back it up.
Listen, I've got news for you. There isn't enough money in the supplement business to warrant full blown, double-blind clinical studies. Most of the companies are too small and the profit margins too slim to fund a huge study unless they receive a grant. And besides, supplements often react differently with different people based on ethnicity, autonomic nervous system, hormones, uptake, etc. So, was it the supplement or the person?
2.) Supplementation has NOT been proven to increase athletic performance.
I go nuts every time I hear this. Again, this is that pompous academic approach to dissing the supplement field. First off, the premise is wrong to begin with. For once and for all: SUPPLEMENTATION IS NOT ABOUT RUNNING FASTER AND JUMPING HIGHER.... SUPPLEMENTATION IS ALL ABOUT RECOVERY... TO BE ABLE TO GET UP TOMORROW AND DO IT AGAIN!
Running faster and jumping higher is the result of technique, training and proper fueling in general. I'll admit many supplement companies, themselves, are guilty of false promotion.
This past year we introduced several new products
available for private-label, including the menu-planning
CDs, skin care and green tea.
-
By far, the menu-planning CD has taken flight and has been our #1 product in 2007. The success is in it's simplicity and the quick sale to clients who really want to be involved with their own success. Great training tool!
-
Next, our Ultimate Skin Care line is way ahead of our projections. This will take a while to build momentum, but we receive very positive feedback with each new order.
-
Green Tea has just been released. I like the Lemon Flavor so much that I gave up coffee. (not an easy thing to do!). Coming in the next few months is new Alkalizing Tea, Stress Tea and an Energy Tea.
