5 Traits of the Most Successful Health & Fitness Business Owners

After 30 years working with some of the most successful fitness professionals in the business, I’ve become super aware of what I call: The 5 BIGGEST CHALLENGES.

The best confront these challenges head-on.

I am pretty sure as I list them, you will know exactly what I’m talking about.  You’ve experienced them.  I have, too.  And, I know that from time to time I need to be careful not to fall into the traps.

How about you…?

Here are the KEYS to how the most successful health and fitness businesses overcome these challenges……

KEY #1 – RESPONSIBILITY

Successful professionals running the top health and fitness businesses all have one thing in common.  They “OWN IT.”

What do I mean by this?  They are NOT victims.  They don’t have a blaming or victim mentality.

When things go wrong, they never, ever say things like, “I couldn’t succeed because of X, Y, and Z” or “It’s actually this person’s fault.”

They always take responsibility for their own mistakes rather than blame others for their failure or misfortune.

The key is this:  By owning a mistake we are more likely to learn from it and much less likely to repeat it.

KEY #2 – ACTION

By now, I’m sure I sound like a broken record… or drunken evangelist!

Successful people TAKE ACTION.  Period.  They do not wait for the “perfect” time or just the “right” circumstances.

Think about this.  In the late ‘70s no one knew anything about computers. There was no home computer market.

But Steve Jobs did not wait for a computer market to develop in order to TAKE ACTION. He believed in home computing and took ACTION on his own beliefs.

The same could be said about Google (Larry Page, Sergey Brin), Virgin Group (Richard Branson), Tesla (Elon Musk), Martha Stewart, Oprah and others.

None of these entrepreneurs waited for the perfect time to TAKE ACTION on their beliefs.

Listen, if you believe in your passion. If you believe in your business.  If you want to be successful, you need to work hard and don’t give up — regardless of what might be going on around you.

KEY #3 – COMMITMENT

The health and fitness industry is as “trendy” as rock ‘n roll and teenage fashion.  Maybe, more so.

In the continuous flood of new fitness models, new programs, new exercises, new franchises, new equipment, it’s tempting to think you have to jump at every new development, try every new thing.

We sometimes call it “shiny object syndrome.”

Successful health and fitness pros DON’T do it.

They inherently know that jumping at every new thing will leave no time to develop their vision.  They stay focused.

They put all their energy toward the ultimate goal…  and ignore the rest.

They stay COMMITTED!

KEY #4 – TEAM BUILDING

No man is an island.

One of the most vital things successful health and fitness business owners do is to build their teams with success-driven people. They recruit, motivate and attempt to build a “dream team.”

Among my advanced consulting clients, I always advise club and studio owners to “…hire people smarter than you!”

And, even beyond their own “dream team” successful owners network and associate with other successful business owners or team leaders.  It can make all the difference between success and failure.

KEY #5 – BELIEF

This is a huge challenge and one that requires constant self-monitoring.  Belief is not just about positive affirmations, mantras or visualizing success.

Norman Peale describes it this way: “Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.”

The most successful health and fitness professionals I know are people you’ve probably never even heard of.  They are not braggarts.  They are not show boats.   Not flashy in any way.

Instead, they are, in fact, humble… and persist with a reasonable confidence in their own abilities to achieve whatever goals they set for themselves.

They are also financially secure.  They enjoy strong relationships with friends, family and loved ones.

They are positive, optimistic and just plain confident.

Just to make the point… think about it in reverse. If you don’t believe that you can succeed, why would you even try?

To be successful, you must cultivate a strong belief in YOURSELF…. even in the face of setbacks or adversities.
